If you have opened a checklist and felt your chest tighten, this one is for you. It is normal, and the list is shorter than it looks.
A lot of people expect planning a wedding to be exciting and are surprised to find it mostly stressful. There are dozens of decisions, most of them involve money, several involve family, and all of them arrive at once on a list someone else wrote. If that is where you are, you are not doing it wrong. It is a common way to feel.
The list looks long because it is all written down at once
Most of the items on a wedding checklist are one conversation and one payment. And almost none of them need doing this month. Look at what actually has a deadline in the next few weeks, and let the rest sit.
Make three decisions and stop
A rough budget, a rough guest count and a rough season. With those three, you can book a venue. With a venue, most of the other decisions get smaller, because the date and the place are fixed and half the options fall away. You do not need to know what flowers you want yet.
Decide what matters to you
Each of you write down the three things you care most about. Maybe it is the food, the photographs and having everyone you love in one room. Spend your money and your energy there. Everything else can be good enough, and nobody will notice or remember the difference.
Take things off the list
You do not need everything a wedding can have. No photo booth, no favours, a friend doing the flowers, a playlist instead of a DJ: all perfectly normal. Cross things off on purpose, and the list stops being a list of failures.
In My wedding you can mark any category as not needed, or as something you are sorting yourselves, and it drops out of what is still to sort.
Give it a time and a place
Wedding planning expands to fill every evening if you let it. Pick one hour a week, do what you can in that hour, and do not think about it the rest of the time. Split the categories between you so that each of you owns some, rather than both of you worrying about everything.
Stop scrolling
The weddings on social media have stylists, professional photographers and budgets you have not been told about. Save a handful of ideas you love, then close the app.
Ask for help, and pay for it if you can
A wedding planner is not only for large budgets. An on-the-day coordinator costs far less and takes the whole of the day itself off your hands, so you are a guest at your own wedding rather than its stage manager.
If it is more than planning
If the worry is affecting your sleep, your relationship or your work, and not just your evenings, that is worth taking seriously. Talk to your GP, or look at the free advice from Mind. A wedding is one day. You matter for a lot longer than that.
